Champ Comes Back: Marloes Coenen Submits Liz Carmouche

by Michael David SmithCoenen submits Carmouche at Strikeforce: Feijao vs. Henderson.Marloes Coenen had a comeback worthy of a champion Saturday night, taking a brutal beating before pulling off a fourth-round submission to defeat Liz Carmouche and retain her Strikeforce 135-pound championship belt.

It was no surprise that Coenen won with a submission off her back -- that's her specialty -- but it was a surprise that she took so much punishment before she got there: Carmouche was a huge underdog, but she had thoroughly pounded on Coenen in the second and third rounds of the fight, and appeared to be close to pulling off a major upset.

But Coenen, in a move reminiscent of Anderson SIlva's comeback victory over Chael Sonnen, used a triangle choke off her back to force Carmouche to tap in the fourth.

"Liz was whipping my ass," Coenen said. "She will be a future champ some day."

Castillo, Diabate early winners UFC on Versus 3

During the UFC preliminary fights in Louisville on Thursday night,  Cyrille Diabate and Danny Castillo walked away winners from the fights that were aired on Facebook.

Castillo wins UFC debut

Danny Castillo won his UFC debut, taking a unanimous decision 30-27, 29-28, 29-28 over Joe Stevenson.

Castillo outlasted a huge slam and a guillotine attempt in the first round to land some punishing blows near the end of the round. In the second, Castillo showed off some good striking and then reversed a big slam from Stevenson. He then threw an inadvertent knee while Stevenson's hand was on the ground. Since it was inadvertent, the referee merely warned Castillo instead of deducting a point.

Castillo managed to use the clinch to to inflict damage in the third round, and took Stevenson down halfway through the round. Stevenson tried again for the guillotine, but couldn't finish. Castillo maintained control, taking Stevenson down one last time before inflicting a bevy of blows in the last 10 seconds of the fight.

Diabate owns Cantwell in a decision

Cyrille Diabate rebounded from a loss to Alexander Gustaffson with a dominating decision over Steve Cantwell, with the judges scoring it 30-27, 30-25, 30-26.

Diabate started strong, throwing every kick and strike in his arsenal at Cantwell, who tried to counter with a takedown. Near the end of the first round, Diabate threw a powerful knee and followed it up with an uppercut that sent Cantwell to the ground. Diabate was unable to finish Cantwell off before the horn sounded, but the damage was done.

In the second round, Diabate, a former K-1 kickboxer, took Cantwell to the ground. He landed strikes there for a short tme before standing back up and throwing more strikes at will. An exhausted Cantwell tried for a takedown, but ended up with Diabate on his back. By the final round, Diabate could do what he wanted, and made the fight resemble a sparring practice. He threw jabs, knees and kicks at will. Cantwell didn't have any defense, but at the same time, Diabate couldn't finish off Cantwell.

UFC NEWS: James Te-Huna donates UFC 127 fight purse to Australia/New Zealand flood relief, UFC matches donation

Australian light heavyweight James Te-Huna lost to Alexander Gustafsson on Saturday night at UFC 127, but his participation on the card in general will do some good for a lot of people.

Te-Huna donated his entire purse from Saturday's event to victims of the recent flooding in Australia and New Zealand.

Now, according to a report from MMAJunkie.com, the UFC is matching Te-Huna's donation in addition to the thousands they're raising through their online UFC 127 memorabilia auction.

"Jamie Te-Huna donated his fight purse," said UFC executive Marshall Zelaznik following Saturday's fight card. "The UFC is actually matching that for the relief in New Zealand. We're also still taking bids for UFC 127 memorabilia. We expect to approach $30,000 as part of a donation for the Queensland flood relief."

More than $800 million in damages were caused by the Tropical Cyclone Yasi in late January and early February, leaving thousands homeless and many, many more affected.

Penick's Analysis: That's a very honorable thing for Te-Huna to do, and it's great that the UFC is matching the donation. I'm sure they'll provide even more assistance, and it's great when they go out of their way to find ways to have an effect on situations like this, no matter the size. At 1-1, Te-Huna is likely to get another shot in the UFC either later in the year or whenever they return to Australia, but this was a great gesture by him.
